Performance Max Campaigns Explained

Performance Max (PMax) is Google's AI-driven campaign type that runs across all of Google's inventory — Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover, and Maps — from a single campaign. It promises more conversions with less manual work, but it also hands a lot of control to the algorithm. Here's how to use it well.

How Performance Max works

Instead of building separate Search, Display, and YouTube campaigns, you give PMax a set of asset groups (headlines, images, videos, logos), a budget, a conversion goal, and optional audience signals. Google's AI then decides where, when, and to whom your ads show, optimising toward your goal in real time.

The pros

  • Reaches every Google channel from one campaign.
  • Powerful automation that finds converters you might miss manually.
  • Great for e-commerce (with a Merchant Center feed) and lead gen at scale.

The cons

  • Limited visibility — Google reports less detail on where spend goes.
  • It can lean on cheap, low-intent inventory if unmanaged.
  • It may cannibalise your brand searches, inflating reported results.

When to use it

PMax works best when you already have solid conversion tracking and enough conversion data to feed the AI. It's excellent alongside a strong Search campaign — not as a total replacement for one. If you're just starting, get search and tracking right first.

How to keep control

Add brand exclusions so PMax doesn't take credit for brand searches, feed it high-quality assets and audience signals, set a realistic target based on a good ROAS for your margins, and review search-term and placement insights regularly. Managed well, PMax is a strong part of a modern PPC strategy.

FAQ

Is Performance Max better than Search campaigns?

They serve different purposes. Search campaigns give you precise control over high-intent keywords; Performance Max maximises reach across all channels using AI. Most accounts get the best results running both together.

Do I need a big budget for Performance Max?

PMax works best with enough conversion data to train the algorithm, so very small budgets can struggle. Solid conversion tracking matters more than a huge budget, but expect a learning period of a few weeks.

Why is Performance Max taking credit for my brand searches?

By default PMax can serve on brand terms and claim those conversions. Applying brand exclusions keeps it focused on genuinely incremental traffic and gives you a truer picture of performance.
